The study of bioactive peptides involves the identification of new species, the synthesis of structural analogs, and diverse applications in biology and medicine. This book explains the biology, pharmacology, and therapeutic applications of endogenous peptide mediators and their analogues. It gives examples of common methodologies employed to identify, characterize, and develop bioactive peptides from a range of natural sources. Part I, on receptor ligands, provides details on bioactive peptides that interact with common drug targets, and Part II looks at research on nonribosomal peptides, which hold promise as sources of endogenous mediators. Part III is devoted to bioactivity of host-defense peptides and antimicrobials, and Part IV explores uses of venom components and toxins.
