《英美散文名篇详注》内容简介：为了阐明英语随笔的创作与风格，英国作家莫里斯·休利特采用了一个绝妙的意象：在昔日的英格兰，每到初夏，乡间的绿草坪上便竖起了祈求丰年的五月柱。柱顶垂下色彩斑斓的缎带，少男少女往柱上添花加叶，还贴上镶金的心形饰物来表达各自的心愿，然后手挽手围着花柱舞蹈，把一根削光的树干化成了五彩缤纷的梦幻奇想。如果说花柱代表散文家的中心思想，那么鲜花彩带就暗示他用来装饰其中心思想的各种话语或修辞手段，而他围绕着花柱跳舞则意味着文章的情节发展和谋篇布局。通过这样的舞蹈，众多饰物渐渐组成优美的形态和恰当的比例，在变幻不停的闪光中显现出作为中心思想的花柱。散文家这样围绕一个中心舞蹈的场景，使人不禁想到常被用来象征古老的行星围绕地球旋转的宇宙模式。这种宇宙模式虽已被人遗忘，但它富于诗意的内涵仍然令人回味。的确，散文本身不就是一个小小的宇宙？它有自身的物质世界，既有目月星辰、高山大海、草木流泉，又有这世界的主宰——有血有肉的人物；同时，英语散文也有自身的精神世界，它处处闪耀着思想的火花，放射出理性的光辉。进入这一世界的人，除了享受各种感官之美外，也能从中汲取深刻的人生哲理，点燃自己思想的火花，使心灵犹如云雀展翅，纷飞向上，构想更加美好的生活、更加完美的现实世界。
我们所说的散文随笔实际上是一个相当笼统的概念。根据传统的观点，凡是与诗歌、戏剧、小说类型不同的文学作品均属散文，而随笔不过是散文的一种品类而已。对随笔的定义更是见仁见智了。有人说它专指那些具有亲切随意、富有个人感情色彩的非正式文章。但按此定义，培根的格言警句式的散文作品可能就要被排斥在外。因此，又有人提出比较宽泛的定义，即“篇幅较短而非专门叙事的散文作品”。
