《中国学术（第18辑）》论文栏第一组聚焦于可见或不可见的社会网络关系。裴宜理探讨了在中国历史上城市抗议最活跃的时期（1919-1927年）和在中国最具活力的城市上海，社会关系网和集体身份的角色是如何变化的。作为现代政治组织的国共两党，此时都亟欲推动本质上可塑的集体认可，然而，他们的努力却势必受到先此存在的社会网络的限制。作者指出，这种发生在政治渴望和社会真实之间的冲突，使得中国经验成为了一个理论创新的基点，来支撑对于有关社会网络的某些标准化假设的检思。孙江选取了另一个角度：通过分别爬梳西语、日语、汉语等语境中有关中国之“秘密结社”的途述，来揭示秘密结社话语所涵摄的多义性与矛盾性。作者指出，是欧洲人创造了se-cret society一语统称中国的异性结拜组织和民间宗教教派，而在汉字圈里，与之相对的日语和汉语则分别是“秘密结社”和“秘密社会”。然而，无论在欧美还是在日本，这种对于中国社会的理解都深受其本国语境的影响。因此，人有剥离外加于秘密结社的知识/权力，解构“大写的”和“单数的”秘密结社叙述，才有可能把握性质和风貌各异的小写的、复数的秘密结社……
