本教材是“高等师范院校英语专业系列教材”的组成部分，分《英国文学史概述及作品选读》和《美国文学史概述及作品选读》两册。全书的编写将充分考虑我国英语专业高年级学生的特点和兴趣爱好，较系统地介绍英美文学，以期使学生对英美文学有总体的认识和把握。在考虑文学史的同时，从浩如烟海的英美文学经典名著中选择影响大、流传广、经过时间考验和脍炙人口的名家的优秀名作，突出文学作品的阅读和赏析，把重点放在原文的阅读和赏析上，引导学生从阅读原著入手，感受英美文学中丰富的思想内涵和人文思想。全书的基本构架为：英美文学均分为七章，每章由概论、作家简介、作品概要、“原著选读”、“注释”、“赏析点评”、“思考题”和“常用网址”等部分构成。每册均附光盘一章，主要包括选读作品的全文、关于该作家和作品的经典评论本教材的编写宗旨是：帮助学生提高文学阅读理解能力、文化理解能力、文学修养和文学鉴赏水平。
