本书的研究对象是以意义具有两层性的四字格成语为主，这种成语是熟语各种复杂类型中较为典型的。所采取的研究方法是以一定语料为基础的内省分析法，主要考察熟悉熟语的理想化的听读者，分析听读者头脑中熟语意义常规化的心理表征和熟语在线理解中的幕后认知和意义建构。
通过对中外熟语研究的论述，我们提出了熟语研究的新视角，确定了认知语义学的熟语分析框架，把隐喻、转喻和概念整合纳入一个统一的框架。隐喻和概念整合关注隐喻性概念形成过程的不同方面。熟语中常规的隐喻和转喻映现是动态的整合网络输入的一部分。熟语中的隐喻和转喻是人们长时记忆中凝固化和常规化的概念映现。整合则利用这些凝固化和常规化的映现在在线的熟语使用和理解过程中，进一步与话语感知空间整合，在短时记忆中产生瞬间和暂时的意义构建。这一分析框架是基于熟语本身的特点提出来的。
熟语作为一种常规化的映现模式，其中的隐喻和转喻受熟语常规化过程影响。隐喻和转喻映现常常超越了原有隐喻和转喻使用语境，可在更一般和广泛的相关语境下使用，使熟语获得了普遍的概更多>>
