本书为作者的博士论文，全书为纯英文本。 本书探讨“才”和“就”的四种用法：时间用法、限制用法、条件用法及强调用法。主张“才”和“就”是梯级算子，用来表示被否认的预期，四种用法可以用一个抽象的语义结构相互连结，“才”和“就”均引发说话者想象的心理梯级，此心理级别与现实产生差距，同时预设一个命题的真假值的改变，并且预设此改变的点与预期的不同：“才”表达的真假值比预期的出现在梯级结构的更远处，“就”表达的比预期的出现在较近处。本书认为“才”和“就”的四种用法可以用一个统一的语意结构完整解释。比起以前的研究，这本书概括性更强，所赋予“才”和“就”的统一语义解释更符合形式语义学的研究目标。
