This book can be a text book for college students or a reference book for modelers and engineers. There are 8 chapters in this book. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction, followed by the mechanical and dynamic behavior of rock masses in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, numerical modeling of jointed rock masses including the discrete element code (UDEC) is reviewed. Several cases in applying UDEC for static problem are presented in Chapter 4, while cases in applying UDEC for rock dynamic problem are given in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6, the application of UDEC in modeling blast wave transmitting in rock tunnels is investigated. A new technology to simulate the whole process of blasting and wave propagation in rock masses by coupling UDEC and AUTODYN-2D is proposed. Chapter 7 presents an application of 3DEC for static modeling, while Chapter 8 discusses some fundamental issues and verification of 3DEC on modeling wave propagation in jointed rock masses.
