简介
本书是在作者为英语专业开设的英语社会与文化课程讲义的基础上编著而成的，以英国和美国社会、文化为纲，以专题形式，从多个维度系统概括和介绍英国和美国社会与文化的方方面面。写作过程中参考了该课程现有的多数教材，在编写体例及内容等方面融合了各家之所长。书中除系统介绍该课程传统的有关社会内容外，专辟英、美社会生活和文化生活，并针对中西文化差异，尽力介绍英、美文化中有别于中国文化的某些突出特点。除英国和美国的基本情况，如英国地理、人口和区域划分等，从"社会类"来讲，内容涉及两国的历史、政治制度、经济制度、教育制度、法律与司法机构、社会保障制度、家庭、社会问题等方面；就"文化类"而言，包括英美人的生活方式、宗教、民族特性、价值观念、大众媒体、娱乐、民俗等。 除系统介绍该课程的传统内容外，本书专辟英、美社会生活和文化生活。并着眼于中西文化差异，在有限的篇幅内尽力介绍与英美文化日常交往密切相关的言谈举止、待人接物、思维模式、饮食习惯、传统习俗规约等大众"交际文化"。
