本书共分三个部分。第一部分是作者科研工作一般性的总结,包括作者从20世纪80年代以来直到2014年5月前发表的论文目录、主持或参与的国家级的科研项目以及相关的资料。从中可以看到作者是如何从一个科研的门外汉逐步成长为一个国际级的科研工作者。第二部分是作者选取的52篇的代表性论文。论文的选取既考虑了作者工作过的领域又考虑到了论文的意义。从这部分中可以发现作者从事交叉研究的特色。第三部分是作者35年科研工作所走过的道路、科研工作的体会以及对年轻一代的期望,表达了一个老科技工作者的心愿——中国由科研大国转型为科研强国。
