《新英语教程》第四版的主干教材由读写译和听说两大系列组成。各分4册，读写译系列每册8个单元，每单元都由精读、泛读和阅读技巧三大板块组成。精读板块由阅读、写作、翻译板块组成。配有教参、学生必备等教辅材料。主要有如下特点：（1）注重培养综合运用能力。不仅强调听说读写译五项技能全面发展，同时还强调五项技能的连接性和互补性。（2）不仅培养语言技能，同时也要传授世界文化方面的知识，培养学生的文化意识，适应国际交流和工作。（3）既有知识输入的环节，又有输出操练的环节。（4）倡导学生自主学习。（5）坚持选材的真实性、趣味性和前瞻性。（6）在课文选材的长度和词汇要求方面，严格按《大学英语课程教学要求》的尺度来衡量，对积极词汇有标示和演练。（7）最大限度地培养学生的思维能力。（8）学练结合，强调可操作性。第一册中的8个单元更新了50%的课文，用具有时代感，趣味性，知识性和思想性更强的材料替代了第三版的部分内容，其中Unit IA，BI，Unit 3BB，Unit 5BI，Unit 7A，BII，和Unit 8BI，BII为新内容。
