阿瑟·韦利是英国20世纪中日古典文学的伟大翻译家之一。他的东方经典的英译作品一问世便引起了西方读者的兴趣,为他们了解遥远东方的文学、文化、社会打开了一扇窗户。艾略特曾经这样评价韦利对英语诗歌和欧洲文化的贡献：“在我们这个时代,每一个用英语创作的诗人大概都读过庞德和阿瑟·韦利翻译的中国诗歌”(艾略特,1949：117)。霍克斯在谈到韦利翻译的两部小说《源氏物语》和《西游记》时也说过：“两者都可能在英国文学中保留永久的一席,堪与伯纳斯、德莱顿等人的翻译作品占据的地位相媲美”(霍克斯,1966：146)。韦利最早的译作问世至今已过去近一个世纪,他的翻译经受了时间的考验,成为了一种文学和诗学传统的一部分；在翻译思想和方法上也同样成为了一种传统的一部分。……
