本书收集了50篇政界名人的演说词，内容丰富，时空跨度较大。从年代上，涵盖了从古代到近代的演讲；从国别上，涉及迦太基、古希腊、英、法、德、美、意大利、前苏联等多个国家；从主题上，包括奴隶制度、种族制度、阶级制度、妇女解放、民主自由等。我们选取这些具有代表性的经典演讲，希望能管窥见豹，在演讲的洋洋大观中，捕捉住震撼力四射的浪花。时过境迁，我们已经无法耳闻演讲者铿锵有力、抑扬顿挫之声，但在力透纸背的文字中，同样可以感受那些历史瞬间的精彩。
对于每一篇演讲，我们都提供了原文、背景和赏析、注释、译文。部分演讲的原文较长，我们做了删节。背景与赏析部分包括演讲者的生平、主要贡献、演讲背景、演讲效果、篇章结构、语言特色等。注释部分包括演讲词中语法、句法难点的总结；精彩名句、修辞手法的介绍与互文引证；陌生的人名、地名、事件等的解释。译文力求简单明了，注重可读性。
