于连是法国小城维里埃一个木匠的儿子。他崇拜拿破仑，立志要像拿破仑那样凭着个人才智建立功勋，飞黄腾达。为了出人头地，他不满足木匠的工作，便把自己装扮成一个虔诚的教徒，因为这是王朝复辟年代唯一留给平民的职业。他刻苦努力，虽然父亲老索莱尔千方百计的阻扰他，但凭着膨胀的野心、不屈不饶的意志以及超人的记忆力，他获得了渊博的只是和非凡的才华。
维里埃的市长德·莱纳先生得知了他的才智，便聘请他作孩子们的家庭教师。在此期间，野心勃勃、才华横溢的于连唤起了市长的妻子德·莱纳夫人的爱情火焰。于连还利用她的单纯无知引诱她。当第一次占有德·莱纳夫人的手时，他感到的并不是爱情的幸福，而是拿破仑式的野心的胜利，是“狂欢”和“喜悦”，是报复心理的满足。但是于连对德·莱纳夫人也确实产生了真正的感情。正当他们两人沉浸在爱河中时，嫉妒的女佣人把秘密透露了出去，消息传遍了整个维里埃。德·莱纳先生得知后，出于对利益的考虑，把于连送到贝藏松神学院继续学习。于连离开后，德·莱纳夫人陷入了深深的悔恨之中。她的良心因其通奸行为而受到折磨，他变得笃信宗教。
于连出类拔萃，在神学院深得院长彼拉神父的赏识。后来彼拉神父把他介绍给巴黎的德·拉莫尔侯爵任私人秘书。侯爵也十分欣赏于连的才智，给予他极大的信任，很快就视于连为心腹。侯爵的女儿，自尊心极强而又傲慢的玛帝尔德，深深地被出身低微但却傲骨凛然、精力旺盛的于连吸引。玛帝尔德小姐，向往浪漫主义 ，她要求于连在月明之夜，登梯爬进她的卧室。于连满怀疑虑地照做了。当晚，她就委身于他了。但是后来，玛帝尔德对他若即若离。于连使出浑身解数，假装追求玛帝尔德的女友，结果重获侯爵女儿的芳心。同时，她发现自己已经怀上了于连的孩子，她写信告诉父亲，请求他原谅于连，并成全他们的婚事。侯爵竭力反对，但玛帝尔德依然决定嫁给于连，并最终强迫父亲答应了他们的婚事。侯爵为了维护自己的名誉，授予于连一笔财产，一个贵族头衔和一个军官职位。正当于连于玛帝尔德春风得意之际，侯爵收到一封毁谤于连而署名德·莱纳夫人的信函，于是立即要求女儿与于连断绝一切关系。
于连眼见即将实现的美梦刹那间破灭，怀恨在心。他赶回维里埃，用手枪射击正在教堂祈祷的德莱纳夫人，事后当场被捕。玛帝尔德更加狂热地爱着雨量。她力图贿赂参加陪审的陪审员们，为营救于连四处奔走。但于连对她却只感到厌烦，心中只想着德·莱纳夫人，世纪上他又重新死去活来地爱上了德·莱纳夫人。狱中的于连，从一切庸俗的野心中解放出来，他真诚地悔恨自己犯下的罪行，决定以死来赎罪。公审时，他当众宣布不祈求任何人的恩赐，并以平民的身份控诉以法官和陪审团为代表的上层统治阶级的反动和对平民的镇压，后来德·莱纳夫人想方设法地去探监，劝他上诉。此时于连才得知，德莱纳夫人给侯爵的那封信，是由听她忏悔的教士起草并强迫她抄写的，于是两人旧情复燃。于连对爱从来就没有如此疯狂过！但是最终在一个阳光灿烂的日子力，于连还是被处死了。于连死后，玛帝尔德抱着她的头颅，举行了盛大的葬礼；而德·莱纳夫人拥抱着孩子们，于三日后离开了人间。
