简介
写作文就要动脑筋,如议论文论点要鲜明,论据要充分、切题,论证方法要得当。逻辑性要强,句子要通顺、合语法,字迹还要工整。因此,人们觉得英语写作颇“伤脑筋”。许多学生写英语作文时,常常显得无所适从,不知如何构思、如何下笔,写出的句子要么不达意,要么不合语法。要想除掉上述问题,不妨翻开本书,细心研读,品味其中,妙处自现。
本书是写作教材,理应只讲写作,写作以外的东西似乎应拒之“门”外。但读者会发现每章都包含有录像视听说训练、阅读训练、范文、语法修辞训练等内容。这或许会使人生出凑数之嫌,然而本书的结构安排却是精心策划,恰到好处,做到合理配置、优化选择,为读者考虑到了细微之处。每一章、每一个细节都是本书的有机组成成分,它们各司其职,分工各异,但都是高效地为提高读者/学生写作能力服务的。这也是本书独到新颖之处,因此,我们大胆而自豪地向大学生及英语自学者推荐这本来自美国的新思维高效英语写作教程。
我们所说的语言实践能力包括听、说、读、写四种能力,这四种能力可分为输入(input)的能力(听、读)和输出(output)的能力(说、写)。一般说来,输出要比输入难,这是因为输出的过程是创造性的活动,需要绞尽脑汁。输出的前提需要有强大的输入信息,否则就成了“巧妇难为无米之炊”,文章无论组织结构多么合理,语句多么优美,如果言之无物,就毫无价值而言,这就是录像材料和阅读材料的存在价值。读者可参考所提供信息,积极联想,整理出支持某一主旨的有关事例、论据等。范文的作用是供学生模仿借鉴:内容包括文章组织结构、遣词造句、衔接手段(cohesive devices)的使用、文章内容的连贯(coherence)。
写作的过程是:信息输入——信息编码——解码/输出,最终目的是输出有思想内容、有组织、有条理、内容连贯、语句通顺的文章。录像材料和阅读文章提供了有关各章主题的丰富信息,为学生提供采集和联想的线索,免得冥思苦想,头脑空空,无话可写。
本书特点:收入基础英语写作的基本内容,它是语言结构大纲和功能意念大纲的完美结合。前者指本书是按写作的基本程序和训练项目编排,从段落写作到文章结构设计,由浅入深;后者指每一章都有一个主题(日记写作、CNN录像和阅读文章等都体现了文章写作的内容)。有充分的输入量,为学习者提供作文的素材和参考的模式,将读、听与写结合起来(作文过程的讨论、同侪校阅也有助于口头表达的提高),突出写作训练,输入为辅。概念讲解清楚,举例具体生动,语言通俗易懂。原文教材不仅带来丰富的写作知识、技法与素材,而且还带来了纯正的英语表达,从而避免言不达意,语句不通,不符合惯用表达,满篇蹩脚的Chinglish。本书不仅教你如何写作文,而且还指导你如何评价别人的作文。
基础英语写作根据作文的目的可分为四种体裁,即描写、说明、记叙和议论:每种文体都用不同手段达到其目的。本书分为四部分:
第一单元:段落写作
段落写作是基础,涉及段落组成部分——句子的写作。句子写作:主题句(topic sentence)、扩展句(developing sentence)和结尾句(concluding sentence);不同体裁的段落写作:描写(descriptive,即用语言文字描绘的图画(a picture described in Words or vetbal picture))、记叙(narrative,即记述所发生事情(an account of what happened,an event))、说明(expository)。
第二单元:文章写作
涉及文章的基本结构成分——段落的写作。段落写作:开启段(introductory paragraph/introduction)、扩展段(developmental paragraph)和收尾段(concluding paragraph/conclusion);各种体裁文章的写作:说明文(expository essay)和议论文(argumentative essay)。说明文是说明事物的情况或道理的文章,目的是介绍某一方面的知识,包括不同方法/策略的文章写作——举例说明、比较/对比说明、分类/分项说明、过程分析说明和因果关系分析说明。议论文的目的是作者通过对某观点的论证使读者接受这一观点,包括论证方式,如立论和驳论;论证方法,如例证法、比较/对比法、因果关系论证法和引证法。(注:本书没包括描写文和记叙文写作、这是因为在基础英语写作阶段更需要了解描写性段落和记叙性段落写作,因为描写和记叙经常作为说明的手段,如扩展的事例(extended example)往往是叙述一段经历)
第三单元:语法复习
涉及写作中语法知识的运用,即句子的构成要符合语法规范
附录:含十个部分,涉及写作规范的常识。(注第三单元和附录内容简单易懂,故未设导读)
第一、二单元各部分简介:
导读——帮助理解原文,尤其是晦涩难懂的术语.起概括说明的作用。我们鼓励多接触英语材料,提高语感,但不可忽视母语在外语学习中的积极作用,尤其涉及英文写作理论时,母语可缩短理解原文的时间,一目了然,免去绞尽脑汁、百思不得其解的困惑。因为本书是写作教材,要突出写作训练,没必要在理解上花更多时间。阅读每章只需浏览片刻,其主要内容便尽收眼底,便捷、易懂、省时。
录像材料——从视听角度提供输入信息。
录像追踪和网上活动——鼓励学生联想,培养搜索信息的能力。
阅读文章——提供某一话题的文字信息。有难词注释,提供语境意义,每章涉及一个话题,介绍西方社会文化中的一般而又十分重要的知识,是英语学习者应了解的知识。
范文——展示优秀作文的构思、布局、写作方法和遣词造句,即供模仿用。
练习——单项训练,针对每一章的写作技能训练与主题内容,形式多样,要求学生动手机会多。
写作技法——提供某项作文训练,如怎样写文章的开头,怎样使用过渡性词语,怎样使文章连贯。
语法复习——教学生如何运用语法知识造出通顺达意的句子。
同侪校阅——提供同学之间互相交流的机会:教学生凭借checklist学会评价作文,借鉴别人作文的优点。
