翻开中国近代历史，许多仁人志士由于经世济民的热血抱负难以施展而发出“生不逢时”或“时不我予”的声声叹息。相比之下，当代中国知识分子尤其是经济学者应该是极其幸运的：自1978年改革开放以来，在过去150多年来屡遭破坏甚至摧毁而几成废墟的基础上，中国经济迅速崛起，在此过程中伴随着许许多多前所未有、异彩纷呈的社会经济现象。对于中国的经济学者来说，有着丰富的现象等待研究，有着众多的线索可供分析，有许多强国富民的政策需要提出，参与一场场见仁见智的热烈辩论，岂非幸事，岂非“生逢其时”。
1978～2005年的27年间，中国的国内生产总值增加了12.2倍，年均增长率高达9.4%，是同一时期全世界经济增长最快的国家；同时，在国际贸易方面，年均增长率高达17%，总量增加了68倍，中国已经是全世界第二大贸易国，加入WTO以后，每年的增长率更是超过25%。正是中国经济所取得的这些令人叹为观止的成就及其对世界经济产生的重要影响使得中国经济的各方面成为全世界关注的焦点。同时，中国在转型过程中呈现出很多在世界经济发展史上独一无二的现象，用现有的经济理论来解释这些现象往往难解其中之奥秘而错误百出。最近的一个例子就是1998～2002年的中国经济因为出现通货紧缩和能耗下降而被国外很多经济学家质疑中国的高速增长是否是真实的。当然，这些质疑以及相关的证伪工作也都是以国外的现有经济理论作为根据的。而通过对中国经济结构和发展进程的充分了解，追根溯源，深入局中剖析，就可以从看似互相矛盾的数字之间发现正常的逻辑关系，找到实实在在的根据，得出令人信服的结论，证明从现有理论看来不可能发生的事情确实在中国发生了。
不盲从国外现有理论，坚持实事求是、具体问题具体分析是研究乃至了解中国当代经济的必由之路。这是我这些年来研究中国经济最主要的心得，也是我把这本书的书名沿用收集在此书中的一篇文章标题《解读中国经济没有现成模式》的原因。正是由于没有现成模式，所以需要构建新的理论。而对中国社会经济有着深刻理解、能够准确把握其制度安排和现象特性的中国经济学家无疑是最合适的构建者，所以这是中国经济学家对经济学的理论进行创新，对经济学的发展作出贡献的一个千载难逢的机会，也是有志于推动中国现代化的经济学家无可旁贷的责任。
当然，把这个机遇变成现实还需要克服很多挑战，国内经济学界的同仁们也始终在为此进行着不懈的努力，这当中既包括个人的潜心钻研，也包括团队的通力协作。除此之外，对于中国经济这样一个充满各种新问题、新现象的领域来说，还需要在深入了解和研究的基础上，不断地就各种新的观点、思路和方法进行充分的交流和探讨。只有通过思想的碰撞和交锋才有可能打磨出成熟的理论和体系。成立于1998年的“中国经济50人论坛”已经在这方面脚踏实地地做了许多积极有益的工作。它将国内致力于中国经济问题研究的各个领域的一流专家学者集合起来，就中国经济改革和发展过程中最前沿又最具争议的问题，通过内部讨论会、长安论坛、论坛年会等多种形式，提供了一个阐发真知灼见和争议讨论的平台。虽然这个论坛还非常年轻，但是已经取得了大量的研究成果，并且对中国经济改革和发展的进程产生了影响。作为论坛第一届学术委员会的成员之一，我对论坛所取得的成就感到由衷的欣慰和自豪，并对它的未来充满信心。
我本人在近20多年中有幸成为了中国当代经济改革发展的一个见证者、跟踪者和研究者。1979年改革开放的初潮涌动之时我在北京大学研读了3年社会主义政治经济学，20世纪80年代中期，成为首批在美国接受了系统的经济学训练并回国参与政策研究的学者。自那时起，我关注着中国改革开放和经济发展进程中遇到的各种各样的问题，倡导用严格的经济学方法来进行分析。我的研究范围从农村经济开始，逐步深入到发展战略、宏观经济、国企改革、金融改革、“三农”问题、对外贸易以及经济学研究与教学等诸多领域。我将研究所得写成了大量文章。这些文章除了发表于国外学术期刊外，有的发表在国内的经济学专业杂志，有的是研究简报，有的是在一些专题研讨会上的演讲，许多文章现已结集成多部论文专著出版。在本书中，我试图将自己近年来在有关中国经济的各个领域的研究进行一次较为完整的梳理和总结。为在方寸之间求得“面面俱到”，我撷取了近年来在多个领域中有代表性的部分小“块头”文章和一些研究简报及演讲稿。这些文章中深入细致的理论分析显然少见，更多的是在阐述一些个人对中国经济的问题、治理之策与挑战、机遇的观点和看法。如果因此给读者留下了“走马观花”的感觉，尚祈见谅；而如果读者虽然未能从中窥得中国经济改革和发展的挑战与机遇的全豹，却能在五彩缤纷的中国经济现象中偶有所得，则会使我深感幸运。
