Sequence-specific DNA binding agents /
简介:These eleven chapters assembled by Waring (pharmacology, U. of Cambridge, UK) were written by senior scientists on diverse aspects on the binding of drugs and antibiotics to sequence-specific DNA. Topics include DNA recognition by triple helix formation, interfacial inhibitors of human topoisomerase I, diversity of topoisomerase I inhibitors for cancer chemotherapy, slow DNA binding, DNA gene targeting using peptide nucleic acid, thermal denaturation of drug-DNA complexes, computer simulations of drug-DNA interactions, the discovery of G-quadruplex telomere targeting drugs, the mechanism of action of telomestatin (a G-quadruplex interactive compound), and structural features of the specific interactions between nucleic acids and small organic molecules. Also included is a more historical paper describing sixty rears of research in characterizing the sequence-selective DNA-binding agent, actinomycin D. Forest ecosystems : analysis at multiple scales / 2nd ed.
作者: Richard H. Waring, Steven W. Running.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Explains methods for integrating the analysis of forests at the individual stand, landscape, regional, continental, and global scales. Introduces a framework and a set of tools that provide a quantitative basis for judging the implications of a wide variety of forest management decisions of the natural resource base. The 1985 edition, a solo effort by Waring, is here revised to emphasize quantitative modeling and extrapolations across large spatial and time scales. The CD-ROM is also new, and contains animated images and computer code for two of the models presented. Suitable as a graduate or undergraduate textbook. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or. Publisher Summary 2 This book provides new methods of analysis by introducing new techniques to explore the changes in climatic cycles, the implications of wide-scale pollution, fire and other ecological disturbances that have a global effect on all life forms. It provides the reader with almost 40 percent new material in an attempt to organize principles and provide examples for expanding the horizon of ecosystem analyses. It also defines terms and explains concepts in a variety of ways by providing models, equations, graphs, and tabular examples. To help facilitate analysis, the book includes a CD-ROM with additional illustrations and Forest BGC software. * Additional coverage of regional and global scaling issues * New chapters on ecosystem modeling, remote sensing and monitoring of atmospheric chemistry added * Includes a CD-ROM with additional illustrations and Forest BGC Software
Forest ecosystems : analysis at multiple scales / 3rd ed.

简介: Praise for previous editions: "Represents a tour de force of modeling, synthesis and integration. I doubt there is anyone else who would be able to pull all this together in a credible way. The authors have succeeded admirably in capturing the essence of landscape processes, their description and simulation." --Ron Neilson, USDA Forest Service and Oregon State University, Corvallis "A nice synthesis and textbookfor forest ecosystems. The depth and breadth of their synthesis is admirable, and the work is well-balanced. The book will be a major contribution." --Michael G. Ryan, USDA Forest Service, Fort Collins "There is a huge wealth of exciting information in this book. I loved the focus on models. This will be a great book and it will be widely used." --Kate Lajtha, Oregon State University, Corvallis "The idea of putting this ecosystem textbook into a modeling framework is a very significant improvement over the 1985 book. Putting scaling as the over-arching theme makes this book most timely." --Hank Margolis, NASA Biospheric Sciences Branch Praise for previous editions: "Represents a tour de force of modeling, synthesis and integration. 简介:The classical bases in additive number theory are the polygonal numbers, the squares, cubes, and higher powers, and the primes. This book contains many of the great theorems in this subject: Cauchy鈥檚 polygonal number theorem, Linnik鈥檚 theorem on sums of cubes, Hilbert鈥檚 proof of Waring鈥檚 problem, the Hardy-Littlewood asymptotic formula for the number of representations of an integer as the sum of positive kth powers, Shnirel鈥檓an鈥檚 theorem that every integer greater than one is the sum of a bounded number of primes, Vinogradov鈥檚 theorem on sums of three primes, and Chen鈥檚 theorem that every sufficiently large even integer is the sum of a prime and a number that is either prime or the product of two primes. The book is also an introduction to the circle method and sieve methods, which are the principal tools used to study the classical bases. The only prerequisites for the book are undergraduate courses in number theory and analysis. Additive number theory is one of the oldest and richest areas of mathematics. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject in 40 years.
