本教材共有20章，每章覆盖一个交际话题。各章的首页提示简要描述了在本章内PETS第三级考生应达到的英语交际水平。
本教材共有20个单元，每单元内容包括：
1 对话/独白 该部分由与本单元交际话题相关的4段对话/独白组成，对话/独自情景真实、语言地道、长短恰当、难度适宜，目的是训练和提高学习者的听力水平。每段对话/独白前，均有提示语点明对话/独白的背景和数道依据对话/独白内容设置的问题，以帮助考生充分理解和操练对话/独白。
2 课文 课文是体现话题的阅读材料。每单元中均有一篇与该单元主话题相关的课文，目的是训练和提高考生的阅读理解水平。此外，每单元课文后均附有5个问题，以帮助考生了解自己对课文的理解程度。
3 单词和短语 单词和短语是本单元对话/独白和课文中出现的生词和短语，并按在对话/独白和课文中出现的先后顺序给出了单词的最新国际音标、词性、中文释义和短语的中文释义。
4 注释 注释针对对话/独白和课文，内容包括两方面：一是从语法、词汇等方面点拨对话/独白和课文中的难点；二是对长难句进行语法分析，并举例讲解语言点、知识点，目的是训练考生灵活运用语言的能力。
5 练习 练习是针对各单元的话题和重点考试内容设计的，考生可以对该单元的学习情况进行检测。该部分题型与笔试、口试考试真卷要求一致，以便于考生全面备考PETS三级。
6 补充读物 为使考生对相关话题进行更深入的了解，提高阅读能力，在每单元最后附有一篇补充读物。
7 全真模拟试题
本书配有期中、期末两套试卷。可以 让考生可以通过练习巩固学习效果，达到以练代学及自测的目的。
8 录音材料
考生可通过以下方式获得本书的录音材料：
（1）本书所赠的MP3光盘：包括对话/独白、课文、词汇和补充阅读的朗读；以及每课听力练习题的录音材料；本书的配套辅导——《教材同步学习指导》一书中10套同步训练习题的听力试题录音和《教材同步练习册》中的听力练习录音。
（2）使用光盘不便的读者可以另购录音带：包括教材每单元听力练习题的录音材料和教材同步练习册每单元听力练习题的录音材料。
附CD-ROM光盘一张，MP3光盘一张。
