简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 Electrogenerated chemiluminescence is found in numerous organic and inorganic materials and has find a range of uses in a range of scientific research and applications. Bard (director, Laboratory of Electrochemistry, U. of Texas in Austin) presents a monograph reviewing the history of the field and describing analytical applications. Eleven chapters first discuss the experimental and theoretical aspects of electrogenerated chemiluminescence and look at the behavior of coreactants, organic molecules, and metal chelates. The application-oriented chapters explore immunoassay, chromatography, and other analytical uses and useful polymers and devices for light production and displays. The level of the material is geared towards beginning graduate students with some grounding in electrochemistry and physical chemistry. Annotation 漏2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 From household appliances to applications in robotics, engineered systems involving complex dynamics can only be as effective as the algorithms that control them. While Dynamic Programming (DP) has provided researchers with a way to optimally solve decision and control problems involving complex dynamic systems, its practical value was limited by algorithms that lacked the capacity to scale up to realistic problems. However, in recent years, dramatic developments in Reinforcement Learning (RL), the model-free counterpart of DP, changed our understanding of what is possible. Those developments led to the creation of reliable methods that can be applied even when a mathematical model of the system is unavailable, allowing researchers to solve challenging control problems in engineering, as well as in a variety of other disciplines, including economics, medicine, and artificial intelligence. Reinforcement Learning and Dynamic Programming Using Function Approximators provides a comprehensive and unparalleled exploration of the field of RL and DP. With a focus on continuous-variable problems, this seminal text details essential developments that have substantially altered the field over the past decade. In its pages, pioneering experts provide a concise introduction to classical RL and DP, followed by an extensive presentation of the state-of-the-art and novel methods in RL and DP with approximation. Combining algorithm development with theoretical guarantees, they elaborate on their work with illustrative examples and insightful comparisons. Three individual chapters are dedicated to representative algorithms from each of the major classes of techniques: value iteration, policy iteration, and policy search. The features and performance of these algorithms are highlighted in extensive experimental studies on a range of control applications. The recent development of applications involving complex systems has led to a surge of interest in RL and DP methods and the subsequent need for a quality resource on the subject. For graduate students and others new to the field, this book offers a thorough introduction to both the basics and emerging methods. And for those researchers and practitioners working in the fields of optimal and adaptive control, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and operations research, this resource offers a combination of practical algorithms, theoretical analysis, and comprehensive examples that they will be able to adapt and apply to their own work. Publisher Summary 2 Dynamic programming is an approach to optimal control designed for situations in which a model of the system to be controlled is available; when no model is available, reinforcement learning divines control policies solely from the knowledge of transition samples or trajectories that are collected beforehand or by online interaction with the system. Otherwise, the two are pretty similar, and Busoniu, Robert Babuska, Bard De Schutter (all systems and control, Delft U. of Technology, the Netherlands), and Belgian researcher Damien Ernst consider them together. They cover their application in large and continuous spaces, approximate value iteration with a fuzzy representation, approximate policy iteration for onlining learning and continuous-action control, and approximate policy search with cross-entropy optimization of basis functions. 简介:This carefully researched study of the land use and environmental history of the Meihuashan region of southwest China is based on several years of ethnographic research carried out during the 1990s. Five villages were studied in depth, though Coggins (geography and Asian studies, Simon's Rock College, Bard) provides histories for the whole area. The book relates practices before and after 1949, to provide a full historical background to current practices of hunting, agriculture, sacred spaces, and attitudes towards the environment. 简介:Rapid advances in developmental biology and molecular genetics have highlighted the growing need for a visual guide to the development of the major embryos used in laboratories world-wide. It is increasingly important that all biologists are familiar with the wide range of these embryos, each of which offers unique insights into one of the most ... more 籩xciting and challenging quests in biology: how does a complex adult animal develop from a single cell? This atlas summarizes the early development of twelve key embryos. Jonathan Bard has brought together a team of experts to illustrate and write about the development of their own preferred research embryos-from plants, through primitive systems such as the slime mold, invertebrates (worms, mollusks, sea urchins, leeches, and Drosophila) to vertebrates (fish, toad, chick, mouse, and human). Each chapter has sections on the advantages of the embryo as an experimental system, an illustrated description of normal development, well-known developmental mutants, discussions of experimental manipulations, the future potential for the embryo, and key references. ?less

简介:F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise, made him instantly famous, and prefigured the themes and characters in later works such as The Great Gatsbyand Tender is the Night. A thinly disguised account of Fitzgerald's own Princeton years, the novel's frank description of the main character's love affairs shocked and delighted its first readers, and the book was an immediate success. The book recounts the story of Amory Blaine as he grows from pampered childhood to young adulthood, and learns to know himself better. At Princeton he becomes a literary aesthete and makes friends with other aspiring writers. As he moves out into the world and tries to find his true direction he falls in love with a succession of beautiful young women. Youthful exuberance and immaturity give way to disillusion and disappointment as Amory confronts the realities of life. Jackson R. Bryer's introduction establishes the novel as an important work in its own right, highlighting its enduring strengths for the modern reader, examining the book's interesting composition history, and exploring its initial reception in 1920. In addition, this edition features an up-to-date bibliography of primary and secondary sources and critical material, a chronology of the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and explanatory notes that provide context for references and allusions. Brilliant and original in style and structure, This Side of Paradisewas a spectacular launching pad for Fitzgerald's career, and stamped him as the bard of the Jazz Age. 简介:In The Art and Rhetoric of the Homeric Catalogue , Benjamin Sammons takes a fresh look at a familiar element of the Homeric epics -- the poetic catalogue. This study uncovers the great variety of functions fulfilled by the catalogue as a manner of speech within very different contexts, ranging from celebrated examples such as the poet's famous "Catalogue of Ships," to others less commonly treated under this rubric, such as catalogues within the speech and rhetoric of Homer's characters. Sammons shows that catalogue poetry is no ossified or primitive relic of the old tradition, but a living subgenre of poetry that is used by Homer in a creative and original way. He finds that catalogues may be used by the poet or his characters to reflect -- or distort -- the themes of the poem at large, to impose an interpretation on events as they unfold, and possibly to allude to competing poetic traditions or even contemporaneous poems. Throughout, the study focuses on how Homer uses his catalogue to talk about the epic genre itself: to explore the boundaries of the heroic world, the limits of heroic glory, and the ideals and realities of his own traditional role as an epic bard. Building on a renewed interest in the "literary list" in other disciplines, Sammons shows that Homer is not only one of the earliest known practitioners of the poetic catalogue, but one of the subtlest and most skillful.
简介:Herodotus the great Greek historian was born about 484 BCE , at Halicarnassus in Caria, Asia Minor, when it was subject to the Persians. He travelled widely in most of Asia Minor, Egypt (as far as Assuan), North Africa, Syria, the country north of the Black Sea, and many parts of the Aegean Sea and the mainland of Greece. He lived, it seems, for some time in Athens, and in 443 went with other colonists to the new city Thurii (in South Italy), where he died about 430. He was 'the prose correlative of the bard, a narrator of the deeds of real men, and a describer of foreign places' (Murray). Herodotus's famous history of warfare between the Greeks and the Persians has an epic dignity which enhances his delightful style. It includes the rise of the Persian power and an account of the Persian empire; a description and history of Egypt; and a long digression on the geography and customs of Scythia. Even in the later books on the attacks of the Persians against Greece there are digressions. All is most entertaining and produces a grand unity. After personal inquiry and study of hearsay and other evidence, Herodotus gives us a not uncritical estimate of the best that he could find. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Herodotus is in four volumes.
简介:Twelfth Night is a comedy by William Shakespeare, named after the Twelfth Night holiday of the Christmas season. It was written around 1601, and was first published in the First Folio in 1623. Twelfth Night's full title is Twelfth Night, or What You Will; Subtitles for plays were fashionable in the Elizabethan period, though this is the only Shakespeare to be donned with one. "Twelfth Night" is a reference to the twelfth night after Christmas Day which was called the Feast of Epiphany. It was originally a Catholic holiday, but prior to Shakespeare's play, the day had become a day of revelry. Servants often dressed up as their masters, men like women, and so forth. This is an important basis for the shenanigans of the play. The play was probably finished between 1600 and 1601. The name of its male lead, Orsino, was likely suggested by Orsini, Duke of Bracciano, an Italian nobleman who visited London in the winter of 1600 to 1601. The play was not printed until its inclusion in the First Folio in 1623. (Quote from wikipedia.org) About the Author William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 - 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who bore him three chil
简介:A vibrant Shakespeare that brings readers closer than ever before possible to Shakespeare's plays as they were first acted. The Norton Shakespeare, Based on the Oxford Editioninvites readers to rediscover Shakespeare—the working man of the theater, not the universal bard-and to rediscover his plays as scripts to be performed, not works to be immortalized. Combining the freshly edited texts of the Oxford Edition with lively introductions by Stephen Greenblatt and his co-editors, glossaries and annotations, and an elegant single-column page (that of the Norton Anthologies), this edition of Shakespeare invites contemporary readers to see and read Shakespeare afresh. Greenblatt's full introduction creates a window into Shakespeare world-the culture, demographics, commerce, politics, and religion of early-modern England—Shakespeare's family background and professional life, the Elizabethan industries of theater and printing, and the subsequent centuries of Shakespeare textual editing.
简介: Robert Burns, the son of a tenant farmer in Ayshire, Scotland, endured great hardship before emerging as a poet and songwriter in his native dialect, as well as in English. This "Bard of Scotland" caught the spirit of his country, as these 23 verses and songs so vividly show. Though his works frequently focused on two of his greatest pleasures--women and Scotch--he also found inspiration in local subjects. His "Tam O'Shanter" is one of the finest examples of narrative verse ever written: it vividly evokes the Scottish landscape and weather, the native inns and native folk, all while telling a compelling, almost supernatural story of the drunken Tam. From "The Twa Dogs" to "Death and Doctor Hornbook," this colorful collection is a pure delight.
简介:In this stunning reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s works, Jonathan Hart explores key topics such as love, lust, time, culture, and history to unlock the Bard’s brilliant fictional worlds. From an in-depth look at the private and public myths of love in the narrative poems, through an examination of time in the sonnets, to a discussion of gender in the major history plays, this book offers close readings and new perspectives. Delving into the text and context of a wide range of poems and plays, Hart brings his wealth of experience to bear on Shakespeare’s representation of history.
简介:Here, in a single volume, is the complete poetry of tow of the best loved poets of the High Romantic period: John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Shelley, the Promethean bard, sings of the sublime and affirms the possibility of transcendence; Keats, more concerned with the limits of Imagination, celebrates the pleasures of the senses and opts for a quieter apocalypse. John Keats (1795-1821), the son of a livery-stable keeper in London, attended the Reverend John Clarke's private school at Enfield until the age of fifteen, when he was apprenticed to a surgeon and apothecary. In 1815 he took up medical studies at Guy's Hospital, London, and in 1816 he passed his examinations. Soon thereafter he abandoned medicine for poetry. With Shelley's help he published his first book in 1817. He died of consumption in Rome in 1821. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was born at Field Place, Sussex, and educated at Eton and Unversity College, Oxford. He was expelled form Oxford in 1811 after circulating a pamphlet he authored called 'The Necessity of Atheism.' That same year he married Harriet Westbrook; they separated after three years, Shelley left England in 1814 with Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, whom he married in 1816. The couple moved around a great deal, Shelley writing all the while. He died at the age of thirty in a sailing accident.

简介:THE GREATEST ADVENTURE OF ALL TIME Richly imagined by the blind bard around 900 B.C.E., Homer's story follows Odysseus on a decade-long journey as he flees Cyclops, angers his gods, resists the Sirens, averts his eyes from Medusa, docks in exotic cities-ever longing to return to his wife and son.
简介: “The bard of biological weapons captures the drama of the front lines.” -Richard Danzig, former secretary of the navy The first major bioterror event in the United States-the anthrax attacks in October 2001-was a clarion call for scientists who work with “hot” agents to find ways of protecting civilian populations against biological weapons. In The Demon in the Freezer, his first nonfiction book since The Hot Zone, a #1 New York Times bestseller, Richard Preston takes us into the heart of Usamriid, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland, once the headquarters of the U.S. biological weapons program and now the epicenter of national biodefense. Peter Jahrling, the top scientist at Usamriid, a wry virologist who cut his teeth on Ebola, one of the world’s most lethal emerging viruses, has ORCON security clearance that gives him access to top secret information on bioweapons. His most urgent priority is to develop a drug that will take on smallpox-and win. Eradicated from the planet in 1979 in one of the great triumphs of modern science, the smallpox virus now resides, officially, in only two high-security freezers-at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and in Siberia, at a Russian virology institute called Vector. But the demon in the freezer has been set loose. It is almost certain that illegal stocks are in the possession of hostile states, including Iraq and North Korea. Jahrling is haunted by the thought that biologists in secret labs are using genetic engineering to create a new superpox virus, a smallpox resistant to all vaccines. Usamriid went into a state of Delta Alert on September 11 and activated its emergency response teams when the first anthrax letters were opened in New York and Washington, D.C. Preston reports, in unprecedented detail, on the government’s response to the attacks and takes us into the ongoing FBI investigation. His story is based on interviews with top-level FBI agents and with Dr. Steven Hatfill. Jahrling is leading a team of scientists doing controversial experiments with live smallpox virus at CDC. Preston takes us into the lab where Jahrling is reawakening smallpox and explains, with cool and devastating precision, what may be at stake if his last bold experiment fails.

简介:The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers’ attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger’s new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore. Never before have Muggles been privy to these richly imaginative tales: “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot,” “The Fountain of Fair Fortune,” “The Warlock’s Hairy Heart,” “Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump,” and of course, “The Tale of the Three Brothers.” But not only are they the equal of fairy tales we now know and love, reading them gives new insight into the world of Harry Potter. The stories are accompanied by delightful pen-and-ink illustrations by Ms. Rowling herself, featuring a still-life frontispiece for each one. Professor Dumbledore’s commentary—apparently written some eighteen months before his death—reveals not just his vast knowledge of Wizarding lore, but also more of his personal qualities: his sense of humor, his courage, his pride in his abilities, and his hard-won wisdom. Names familiar from the Harry Potter novels sprinkle the pages, including Aberforth Dumbledore, Lucius Malfoy and his forebears, and Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington (or “Nearly Headless Nick”), as well as other professors at Hogwarts and the past owners of the Elder Wand. Dumbledore tells us of incidents unique to the Wizarding world, like hilariously troubled theatrical productions at Hogwarts or the dangers of having a “hairy heart.” But he also reveals aspects of the Wizarding world that his Muggle readers might find all too familiar, like censorship, intolerance, and questions about the deepest mysteries in life. Altogether, this is an essential addition to our store of knowledge about the world and the magic that J. K. Rowling has created, and a book every true Harry Potter fan will want to have for their shelves.
