The editors (of the U. of Osnabr眉ck's Institute for Environmental Systems Research, Germany) believe that the use of halophytes may solve some of the problems associated with the increasing salinization of agricultural land. They present the result of research projects conducted in Europe to examine "Sustainable Utilisation of halophytes in the Mediterranean and subtropical dry region." They describe the use of halophytes for marginal land reclamation or as cash crops themselves. Related irrigation and salinity tolerance questions are addressed. The chapters include discussion of salinity tolerance analyses, chemical contents of useful halophytes, field scale test experiments, and other recent research.
