简介:Extending the examination in Prescott's 1985 first edition, he and fellow Australian political geographer Schofield focus on two maritime boundaries that define the marine domain of coastal states. The first is the baseline from which national maritime claims are made, and consists of a low-water line or straight lines joining points on the low-water line or a combination of low-water line and straight lines. This they look at from such perspectives as islands and rocks, and maritime boundary disputes and options for dispute resolution. The second boundary consists of a suite of lines, each defining the outer limits of a specific zone of seas and seabed: territorial waters, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone, and the continental shelf more than 200 nautical miles from the baseline. They look at these in specific locations, such as the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, and Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Nijhoff is an imprint of Brill. 作者: Antoine de Saint-Exupery 著
出版社:Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2000年05月
简介: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry first published The Little Prince in1943, only a year before his Lockheed P-38 vanished over theMediterranean during a reconnaissance mission. More than a halfcentury later, this fable of love and loneliness has lost none ofits power. The narrator is a downed pilot in the Sahara Desert, frantically trying to repair his wrecked plane. His efforts areinterrupted one day by the apparition of a little, well, prince, who asks him to draw a sheep. "In the face of an overpoweringmystery, you don't dare disobey," the narrator recalls. "Absurd asit seemed, a thousand miles from all inhabited regions and indanger of death, I took a scrap of paper and a pen out of mypocket." And so begins their dialogue, which stretches thenarrator's imagination in all sorts of surprising, childlikedirections. The Little Prince describes his journey from planet to planet, each tiny world populated by a single adult. It's a wonderfullyinventive sequence, which evokes not only the great fairy tales butalso such monuments of postmodern whimsy as Italo Calvino'sInvisible Cities. And despite his tone of gentle bemusement,Saint-Exupéry pulls off some fine satiric touches, too. There's theking, for example, who commands the Little Prince to function as aone-man (or one-boy) judiciary: I have good reason to believe that there is an old rat livingsomewhere on my planet. I hear him at night. You could judge thatold rat. From time to time you will condemn him to death. That wayhis life will depend on your justice. But you'll pardon him eachtime for economy's sake. There's only one rat. The author pokes similar fun at a businessman, a geographer, anda lamplighter, all of whom signify some futile aspect of adultexistence. Yet his tale is ultimately a tender one--a heartfeltexposition of sadness and solitude, which never turns into PeterPan-style treacle. Such delicacy of tone can present real headachesfor a translator, and in her 1943 translation, Katherine Woodssometimes wandered off the mark, giving the text a slightly woodenor didactic accent. Happily, Richard Howard (who did a finenip-and-tuck job on Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma in 1999)has streamlined and simplified to wonderful effect. The result is anew and improved version of an indestructible classic, which alsorestores the original artwork to full color. "Trying to be witty,"we're told at one point, "leads to lying, more or less." ButSaint-Exupéry's drawings offer a handy rebuttal: they're fresh, funny, and like the book itself, rigorously truthful. --JamesMarcus
简介:The fully updated second edition of "The Geography of Tourism and Recreation" continues to be a comprehensive and accessible introduction to tourism, leisure and recreation. It not only introduces landmark studies and recent contributions to geographers' expanding interest in how people spend their leisure time in space, but seeks to illustrate how recreation and tourism phenomenon, are seemingly separate and yet integrated aspects of the wider leisure phenomenon. Each chapter offers a distinctive series of insights into how the geographer has approached the analysis of tourism and recreation.

简介:Clement Robert Markham (1830-1916) was a geographer who took part in one of the many Arctic expeditions launched to search for missing explorer John Franklin (1786-1847). This account, published in 1853, was written in response to criticism of the expedition. They had found some evidence of Franklin's route - he had set off in May 1845 to find the North-West Passage - but returned to Britain without any of the survivors. Markham gives a brief history of Arctic exploration, but the majority of the book recounts the expedition's efforts to find Franklin. The crew endured a harsh winter and sailed in iceberg-laden waters along the coast of Greenland, looking for clues of Franklin's whereabouts. They also spent some time exploring the Parry Islands (the present-day Queen Elizabeth Islands). Markham's account of the rescue mission provides insight into the little-known and often dangerous world of Arctic explorers.
简介:The 1870s in France - Rimbaud’s moment, and the subject of this book - is a decade virtually ignored in most standard histories of France. Yet it was the moment of two significant spatial events: France’s expansion on a global scale, and, in the spring of 1871, the brief existence of the Paris Commune - the construction of revolutionary urban space. Arguing that space, as a social fact, is always political and strategic, Kristen Ross has written a book that is at once history and geography of the Commune’s anarchist culture - its political language and social relations, its values, strategies, and stances. Central to her analysis of the Commune as social space and oppositional culture is a close textual reading of Arthur Rimbaud’s poetry. His poems - a common thread running through the book - are one set of documents among many in Ross’s recreation of the Communard experience. Rimbaud, Paul Lafargue, and the social geographer Elisee Reclus serve as emblematic figures moving within and on the periphery of the Commune; in their resistance to the logic and economy of a capitalist conception of work, in their challenge to work itself as a term of identity, all three posed a threat to the existing order. Ross looks at these and other emancipator notions as aspects of Communard life, each with an analogous strategy in Rimbaud’s poetry. Applying contemporary theory to a wealth of little-known archival material, she has written a fresh, persuasive, and original book.
简介:As Israelis and Palestinians negotiate separation and division of their land, Meron Benvenisti, former Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, maintains that any expectations for "peaceful partition" are doomed. In his controversial book,he raises the possibility of a confederation of Israel/Palestine, the only solution that he feels will bring lasting peace. The seven million people in the territory between Jordan and the Mediterranean are mutually dependent regarding employment, water, land use, ecology, transportation, and all other spheres of human activity. Each side, Benvenisti says, must accept the reality that two national entities are living within one geopolitical entity-- their conflict is intercommunal and will not be resolved by population transfers or land partition. A geographer and historian by training, Benvenisti conveys the perspective of both Israeli and Palestinian communities. He recognizes the great political and ideological resistance to a confederation, but argues thatthere are Israeli Jews and Palestinians who can envision an undivided land, where attachment to a common homeland is stronger than militant tribalism and segregation in national ghettos. Acknowledging that equal coexistence between Israeli and Palestinian may yet be an impossible dream, he insists that such a dream deserves a place in any negotiations.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 A text for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in departments of earth and environmental sciences, with emphasis on the environmental perspective. Provides an assessment and evaluation of environmental hazards and problems such as volcanos, mining, and waste disposal, suggests methods of dealing with them, and covers planning, development, and management of aspects of the environment which relate to geology. Includes b&w photos and maps. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or. Publisher Summary 2 Environmental Geologyis aimed primarily at upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in departments of earth and environmental sciences, but will also strongly appeal to the professional geologist, geographer, civil engineer and planner. As human activities continue to degrade the Earth, the crucial importance of environmental geology is fast being recognized, and course structures are beginning to exhibit an environmental bias. As a result, this book is designed to cater to this new audience and direction. It provides an assessment and evaluation of environmental hazards (volcanoes, earthquakes, etc) and problems (mining, waste disposal, etc), and suggests methods of dealing with them. In short, it covers the planning, development and management of those aspects of the environment that relate to geology and those that are fundamental to the future health of our planet. Comprehensive coverage, up-to-date, densely illustrated and fully referenced throughout. Varied environmental concerns of different regions are represented by a broad geographical spread of examples. Author is a distinguished engineering geologist with extensive international experience.
简介:This book systematically studies all international maritime boundaries of the world. It contains the text of every modern maritime boundary agreement and descriptions of such boundaries that have been judicially established; a map illustrating each of those boundaries; a detailed analysis of each maritime boundary; papers by the experts examining the status of maritime boundary delimitations in each of ten regions of the world; and papers by other experts analyzing key issues in maritime boundary theory and practice from a global perspective. The book fills a major gap in the information and analyzes available to persons interested in the subject. For the operator in the field it comprehensively collects official descriptions of the existing boundary lines; explains how the existing boundary lines were generated, and identifies the problems that remain in regard to the existing lines; and identifies the boundaries that are not yet established and, in some cases, why. For the diplomat and technical personnel assisting efforts to resolve other maritime boundaries, the book provides comprehensive information on the techniques used by others in the past, and analyzes their problems and successes For the international lawyer, judge, and academician, the book analyzes the current practices, trends, and issues that will contribute to the customary and conventional international law and theory on the subject. For the geographer, the book is essential to an understanding of the partitioning of ocean space and the transboundary issues associated with ocean uses.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 After setting the stage by constructing a dynamic model of taxes on land and buildings, American economists and a British geographer examine how various tax mechanisms and nontax alternatives that regulate land use complement or substitute for one another in their effects on land use. Three studies describe the impact of tax increment financing, preferential assessments, and local sales tax; three more compare the land use effects of property taxes and direct regulation; and the final three examine the more radical institutional variants of the private community association as the mode of residential development, and taxing lot frontage rather than land value. 简介:This volume is a fitting tribute to one of Australia s most celebrated migration scholars. Russell King, International Journal of Popular Geography International Migration into the 21st Century is most scholarly and original in its contribution to migration and refugee studies. Anthony H. Richmond, Journal of Refugee Studies . . . there is no doubt that the volume will provide interesting reading. The essays highlight not only the increasing complexity of international migration in the twenty-first century but also society s need to respond innovatively and to courageously challenge established social, economic, and political norms. It is the focus on future developments in international migration that makes the volume a valuable contribution to the migration literature. It is also an excellent focus for a volume to honour Reginald Appleyard, who dedicated his entire academic life to our understanding of international migration. Brigitte Waldorf, The Professional Geographer This volume of papers is among the best to appear in the prolific literature on international migration published during the last two decades. It should be of value both to the migration specialist and to readers interested in this increasingly critical area of population research. Michael P. Todaro, Population and Development Review The eminent scholars within this volume take stock of, and look forward to, core issues in the field of migration studies. In my view this is an excellent book. Jeroen Doomernik, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands Reginald Appleyard occupies an eminent position in the field of international migration and development studies. This enlightening volume of essays, in his honour, brings together contributions from a distinguished group of scholars who have known him for many years and hold him in high esteem. Combining judgements and expertise from all fields of the social sciences, this unique book provides a truly inter-disciplinary analysis of one of the most significant emerging problems of the 21st Century. The authors examine different aspects of migration from an international perspective, evaluating the nature and significance of change in the movement of people, and attempting to predict emerging trends in the volume, direction and composition of global migration. The book questions the causes of illegal and refugee migration, the politics of selection and restriction, and the changing determinants of return migration. In particular, the authors emphasise that original approaches and theories are required to study and understand the rapidly changing trends in international migration associated with new technology and globalisation. By addressing issues which are likely to be of growing significance during the 21st century, this thought-provoking book will be of immense value to students, scholars and researchers in the social sciences, and especially the theory and policy of international migration.
