作者: Toni Morrison 著
简介:Book DescriptionToni Morrison's new novelis a Faulknerian symphony of passion and hatred, power andperversity, color and class that spans three generations of blackwomen in a fading beach town.In life, Bill Cosey enjoyed the affections of many women, who woulddo almost anything to gain his favor. In death his hold on them maybe even stronger. Wife, daughter, granddaughter, employee, mistress: As Morrison's protagonists stake their furious claim onCosey's memory and estate, using everything from intrigue tooutright violence, she creates a work that is shrewd, funny, erotic, and heart-wrenching.Amazon.comThe first page of Toni Morrison's novel Love is a soft introductionto a narrator who pulls you in with her version of a tale of theocean-side community of Up Beach, a once popular ocean resort.Morrison introduces an enclave of people who react to one man--BillCosey--and to each other as they tell of his affect on generationsof characters living in the seaside community. One clear truthhere, told time and again, is how folks love and hate each otherand the myriad ways it's manifested; these versions of humanity areseen in almost every line. Monsters and ghosts creep into younggirls' dreams and around corners and then return to staid ladies'lives as they age and remember friendships and cold battles. Menand women--Heed, Romen, Junior, Christine, Celestial, and the restof Morrison's cast--cry and sing out their weaknesses and strengthsin rotating perspectives. Sandler, a Cosey employee, is a brilliantagent of Morrison's descriptions of human behavior, "Then, in asudden shift of subject that children and heavy drinkers enjoy, 'Myson, Billy was about your age. When he died, I mean.'" And Romen isallowed to play hero by saving a young girl from a brutal gangrape, while at the same time, he battles disgust like no superhumanwould be caught dead feeling.Though slim in pages, Morrison constructs Love with a precision andelegance that shows her characters' flaws and fears with brutalaccuracy. Love may be less complex than others in the grandMorrison oeuvre, but not because Morrison performs literaryhand-holding. Readers will experience in this smooth, sharp-eyedgem another instance of the Toni Morrison craftsmanship: she entersyour mind, hangs a tale or two there, and leaves just as quietly asshe came. --E. Brooke GilbertFrom Publishers WeeklyAt the center of this haunting, slender eighth novel by Nobelwinner Morrison is the late Bill Cosey-entrepreneur, patriarch, revered owner of the glorious Cosey Hotel and Resort (once "thebest and best-known vacation spot for colored folk on the EastCoast") and captivating ladies' man. When the novel opens, theresort has long been closed, and Cosey's mansion shelters only twofeuding women, his widow, Heed, and his granddaughter, Christine. Then sly Junior Viviane, fresh out of "Reform, then Prison,"answers the ad Heed placed for a companion and secretary, and setsthe novel's present action-which is secondary to the rich past-inmotion. "Rigid vipers," Vida Gibbons calls the Cosey women;formerly employed at the Cosey resort, Vida remembers only itsgrandeur and the benevolence of its owner, though her husband,Sandler, knew the darker side of Vida's idol. As Heed and Christinefeud ("Like friendship, hatred needed more than physical intimacy:it wanted creativity and hard work to sustain itself"), Junior ofthe "sci-fi eyes" vigorously seduces Vida and Sandler's teenagegrandson. In lyrical flashbacks, Morrison slowly, teasingly revealsthe glories and horrors of the past-Cosey's suspicious death, theprovenance of his money, the vicious fight over his coffin, hisdisputed will. Even more carefully, she unveils the women inCosey's life: his daughter-in-law, May, whose fear that civilrights would destroy everything they had worked for drove her tokleptomania and insanity; May's daughter, Christine, who spent hardyears away from the paradise of the hotel; impoverished Heed theNight Johnson, who became Cosey's very young "wifelet"; themysterious "sporting woman" Celestial; and L, the wise and quietformer hotel chef, whose first-person narration weaves throughoutthe novel, summarizing and appraising lives and hearts. Morrisonhas crafted a gorgeous, stately novel whose mysteries are graduallyunearthed, while Cosey, its axis, a man "ripped, like the rest ofus, by wrath and love," remains deliberately in shadow, even as hisfamily burns brightly, terribly around him. From BooklistDespite the simplicity of its title, Love is a profound novel. ANobel laureate must feel considerable pressure to keep performingon a higher level than other writers. With her latest novel,Morrison slaps our face with the fact that she is better than most. The book has the tone of an elegy, for it emerges as a remembranceof and yearning for past times and past people in a black seasidecommunity. There were days, back in the 1940s and 1950s, when theCosey Hotel and Resort was the place for blacks to vacation, dance, and dine. Bill Cosey, a charismatic figure greatly attractive towomen, ran the resort. But now Bill is dead, and the story is, aswe see, not only a paean to past good times but also a portrait ofBill Cosey's power. Unusual for blacks at the time, Bill did enjoypower, both economic and social, for as far as the boundaries ofhis coastal town reached--his kingdom by the sea. Now, in hisabsence, the women in his life jockey for their own power in thevacuum he left behind; their world now revolves around his will, scribbled many years ago on a dirty menu. The novel's sectionheadings tell the tale of the different roles Bill played in thesewomen's lives: friend, benefactor, lover, and husband, amongothers. At least in her later novels, Morrison can stand to becriticized for obscurantism, which is also the case, to a certaindegree, here; in fact, readers may want to compose a chart as theyread, to keep characters and their relationships to each otherstraight. But as a vivid painter of human emotions, Morrison iswithout peer, her impressions rendered in an exquisitely metaphoricbut comfortably open style. Brad HooperFrom AudioFileBill Cosey's male magnetism attracts the women who inhabitMorrison's pages. Some commanding, some flighty, all are drawn toCosey's passion. Once, Cosey's Hotel and Resort on the beach wasthe place for "colored folk on the East Coast." Now, the run-downstructure is home to his contentious widow and granddaughter.Through a series of retrospectives, the mystery of the questionablecircumstances surrounding Cosey's death and his role in eachwoman's life gradually unfolds. Morrison confronts issues of racein America, particularly the deep disappointment of manyAfrican-Americans in the face of ineffectual civil rightslegislation. Aching with melancholy for another, better, time, atime left in a troubled past, Morrison's novel combines elegance oflanguage with a lush, luxurious reading to make "must listening."S.J.H. Hell in contemporary literature : Western descent narratives since 1945 /
作者: Rachel Falconer.
简介:What does it mean when people use the word ''Hell'' to convey the horror of an actual, personal or historical experience? This book explores the idea that modern, Western secular cultures have retained a belief in the concept of Hell as an event or experience of endless or unjust suffering. In the contemporary period, the descent to Hell has come to represent the means of recovering - or discovering - selfhood. In exploring these ideas, this book discusses descent journeys in Holocaust testimony and fiction, memoirs of mental illness, and feminist, postmodern and postcolonial narratives written after 1945. A wide range of texts are discussed, including writing by Primo Levi, W.G. Sebald, Anne Michaels, Alasdair Gray, and Salman Rushdie, and films such as Coppola''s Apocalypse Now and the Matrix trilogy. Drawing on theoretical writing by Bakhtin, Levinas, Derrida, Judith Butler, David Harvey and Paul Ricoeur, the book addresses such broader theoretical issues as: narration and identity; the ethics of the subject; trauma and memory; descent as sexual or political dissent; the interrelation of realism and fantasy; and Occidentalism and Orientalism. Features *Defines and discusses what constitutes Hell in contemporary secular Western cultures *Relates ideas from psychoanalysis to literary traditions ranging from Virgil and Dante to the present *Explores the concept of Hell in relation to crises in Western thought and identity. e.g. distortions of global capitalism, mental illness, war trauma and incarceration *Explains the significance of this narrative tradition of a ''descent to hell'' in the immediate political context of 9/11 and its aftermath Contents Introduction Descent and Return: the katabatic imagination Chapter 1 - Hell in Our Time (i) Is Hell a fable? 简介: Book Description When a letter arrives for unhappy but ordinary Harry Potter, a decade-old secret is revealed to him that apparently he's the last to know. His parents were wizards, killed by a Dark Lord's curse when Harry was just a baby, and which he somehow survived. Escaping his hideous Muggle guardians for Hogwarts, a wizarding school brimming with ghosts and enchantments, Harry stumbles upon a sinister adventure when he finds a three-headed dog guarding a room on the third floor. Then he hears of a missing stone with astonishing powers which could be valuable, dangerous, or both. From Amazon.co.uk Say you've spent the first 10 years of your life sleeping under the stairs of a family who loathes you. Then, in an absurd, magical twist of fate you find yourself surrounded by wizards, a caged snowy owl, a phoenix-feather wand and jellybeans that come in every flavour, including strawberry, curry, grass and sardine. Not only that, but you discover that you are a wizard yourself! This is exactly what happens to young Harry Potter in J K Rowling's enchanting, funny debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In the non-magical human world--the world of "Muggles"--Harry is a nobody, treated like dirt by the aunt and uncle who begrudgingly inherited him when his parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. But in the world of wizards, small, skinny Harry is renowned as a survivor of the wizard who tried to kill him. He is left only with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, curiously refined sensibilities and a host of mysterious powers to remind him that he's quite, yes, altogether different from his aunt, uncle, and spoilt, pig-like cousin Dudley. A mysterious letter, delivered by the friendly giant Hagrid, wrenches Harry from his dreary, Muggle-ridden existence: "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". Of course, Uncle Vernon yells most unpleasantly, "I AM NOT PAYING FOR SOME CRACKPOT OLD FOOL TO TEACH HIM MAGIC TRICKS!" Soon enough, however, Harry finds himself at Hogwarts with his owl Hedwig ... and that's where the real adventure--humorous, haunting, and suspenseful--begins. This magical, gripping, brilliant book--a future classic to be sure--will leave children clamouring for a sequel. (Ages 8-13) --Karin Snelson Amazon.co.uk Review Just when it seems that there cannot possibly be another twist to the Harry Potter tale, Stephen Fry dons his haughtiest and naughtiest tones to bring Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stoneto vibrant life on audio. Harry Potter has spent the first 10 years of his life at the mercy of the dreadful Dursleys--the aunt, uncle and fat, spoilt brat of a cousin who reluctantly gave him a home after the death of his mother and father. But on his 11th birthday Harry discovers that he is no ordinary boy, and despite the best efforts of his hideous relatives he escapes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his new life as a trainee wizard. And the rest, as they say, is history... As Harry battles against the evils thrown in his path, Stephen Fry injects the proceedings with a wry, dry and extremely contagious humour that perfectly suits the tale, wringing out the best in Harry and his cohorts as they get to grips with their new lives at the sharp end of Hogwarts. Fry's innate upper-class drone is perfectly suited to the telling of this most magical tale, cracking into the high-pitched squawking of Hermione the swat, or the gentle tones of the firm but fair Dumbledore, or the evil sniping of slimey Snape at precisely the right moments, adding further atmosphere and intensity to the story Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stoneis a fine story and much has been written about its success but until you have heard Fry's cracking reading of this most magical of stories then you simply haven't lived. As with any audio book, this one is perfect for car journeys and an ideal way of introducing reluctant readers to the magic that is Harry Potter. (Age 9 and over) --Susan Harrison Book Dimension length: (cm)17.8 width:(cm)11.1
简介: Book Description The Dursleys were so mean that hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike. And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley's younger sister, Ginny. But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone--or something--starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects...Harry Potter himself? Amazon.com It's hard to fall in love with an earnest, appealing young hero like Harry Potter and then to watch helplessly as he steps into terrible danger! And in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the much anticipated sequel to the award-winning Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, he is in terrible danger indeed. As if it's not bad enough that after a long summer with the horrid Dursleys he is thwarted in his attempts to hop the train to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his second year. But when his only transportation option is a magical flying car, it is just his luck to crash into a valuable (but clearly vexed) Whomping Willow. Still, all this seems like a day in the park compared to what happens that fall within the haunted halls of Hogwarts. Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. This deliciously suspenseful novel is every bit as gripping, imaginative, and creepy as the first; familiar student concerns--fierce rivalry, blush-inducing crushes, pedantic professors--seamlessly intertwine with the bizarre, horrific, fantastical, or just plain funny. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson Amazon.com Audiobook Review What makes the Harry Potter series so successful? Maybe it's the fact that J.K. Rowling doesn't write children's books, she writes children's stories, more in the tradition of the Brothers Grimm than Dr. Seuss. The exploits of Harry and his friends captivate even the shortest attention spans by engaging the imagination with vivid characters and fast-moving action, instead of trying to merely catch the eye with colorful pictures or pop-up effects. Not surprisingly, the Potter tales sound wonderful read aloud, and adapt to the audiobook format extremely well. Broadway actor Jim Dale's impressive vocal range gives each character in the book its own distinctive voice--a considerable task, given the pantheon of witches, warlocks, ghosts, ghouls, dwarves, and elves that Harry encounters in his second outing. And thankfully, since the book is read unabridged, no one's favorite character is omitted. Engaging for children without being childish, the audio version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is worthy addition to the deservedly popular series. (Running time: 9 hours, 6 cassettes) --Andrew Nieland From School Library Journal Grade 4 Up-Harry Potter is even more eager to leave the Dursleys and return to Hogwarts now that he knows about witchcraft, wizardry, and magic and has friends like Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. J.K. Rowling's bestseller is presented enthusiastically by Jim Dale. Each character's personality comes through in clear descriptive tones. Listeners will enjoy hearing all the difficult words pronounced easily and clearly. It is a plus for American children to hear a British actor read the book with proper pronunciations. This recording is a wonderful addition to library collections and will make the story accessible to youngsters who might be overwhelmed by the length of the book and the complexity of some of the words. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY From Booklist Given the furor this book has already caused in the U.S., it seems almost redundant to review it; however. . . . Harry Potter's exploits during his second year at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry completely live up to the bewitching measure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, a Booklist Editors' Choice, 1998. Harry's summer with the spiteful Dursleys is as dismal as his life with them before Hogwarts, and not only that, a neurotic house-elf suddenly appears to warn him against returning to school. Harry, of course, goes back to school. Once there, he finds himself in danger, as predicted by the house-elf. Strange things are happening. Why can only Harry hear an eerie voice talking about escaping and killing? Who or what has put several students into a petrified state? Harry and his sidekicks, Ron and Hermione, work furiously to get to the bottom of it all. It doesn't help that the rumor spreads that Harry is the long-dreaded heir of Slytherin, one of the school's founders, who purportedly created a Chamber of Secrets that houses a grotesque monster that can only be released by the heir. The mystery, zany humor, sense of a traditional British school (albeit with its share of ghosts, including Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom), student rivalry, and eccentric faculty, all surrounded by the magical foundation so necessary in good fantasy, are as expertly crafted here as in the first book. Fans who have been thirsting for this sequel will definitely not feel any disappointment. In fact, once they have read it, they will be lusting for the next. Sally Estes From Library Journal Grade 3-8-With a year at Hogwarts School under his belt, Harry expects the new term to go smoothly, but a wizard's share of surprises and adventures await the likable lad and his friends. Rowling works her magic and leaves readers begging for more. (July) From Kirkus Reviews This sequel to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (1998) brings back the doughty young wizard-in-training to face suspicious adults, hostile classmates, fretful ghosts, rambunctious spells, giant spiders, and even an avatar of Lord Voldemort, the evil sorcerer who killed his parents, while saving the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from a deadly, mysterious menace. Ignoring a most peculiar warning, Harry kicks off his second year at Hogwarts after a dreadful summer with his hateful guardians, the Dursleys, and is instantly cast into a whirlwind of magical pranks and misadventures, culminating in a visit to the hidden cavern where his friend Ron's little sister Ginny lies, barely alive, in a trap set by his worst enemy. Surrounded by a grand mix of wise and inept faculty, sneering or loyal peersplus an array of supernatural creatures including Nearly Headless Nick and a huge, serpentine basiliskHarry steadily rises to every challenge, and though he plays but one match of the gloriously chaotic field game Quidditch, he does get in plenty of magic and a bit of swordplay on his way to becoming a hero again. Readers will be irresistibly drawn into Harry's world by GrandPr's comic illustrations and Rowling's expert combination of broad boarding school farce and high fantasy.
Ghosts’ Shipwreck的任务是让小读者根据对故事的理解和生活的体验,来“确定”故事*后两个版本的结局到底哪一个是真相。
Candy House

One of Sidney Sheldon's most popular and bestselling titles, repackaged and reissued for a new generation of fans. Kate Blackwell is one of the richest and most powerful women in the world. She is an enigma, a woman surrounded by a thousand unanswered questions. Her father was a diamond prospector who struck it rich beyond his wildest dreams. Her mother was the daughter of a crooked Afrikaaner merchant. Her conception was itself an act of hate-filled vengeance. At the extravagent celebrations of her ninetieth birthday, there are toasts from a Supreme Court Judge and a telegram from the White House. And for Kate there are ghosts, ghosts of absent friends and of enemies. Ghosts from a life of blackmail and murder. Ghosts from an empire spawned by naked ambition! Sidney Sheldon is one of the most popular storytellers in the world. This is one of his best-loved novels, a compulsively readable thriller, packed with suspense, intrigue and passion. It will recruit a new generation of fans to his writing. 作者简介: Sidney Sheldon is the mega-selling international author of seventeen previous bestselling novels. He features in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most translated author. He is also a highly acclaimed, award-winning scriptwriter for stage, film and television.
简介:The excitement of the first advance comments bears witness to the singularity and power of Maxine Hong Kingston's memoir of a "girlhood among ghosts." It is a book of marvels and terrors - an utterly unexpected revelation of life lived in present-day America and haunted by China and its past. The author was born in Stockton, California. Her parents came to America in the 1930's from a tiny peasant village in China. Her childhood was lived among the ghosts they brought with them - the millennia-old legends, traditions, imperatives, folk beliefs, the ways of making sense of life and surviving that they clung to in the face of American "reality". But she herself had to confront the new ghosts - Policeman Ghosts, Social Worker Ghosts, Garbage Ghosts, Wino Ghosts - the patterns of the West. With stunning force Maxine Hong Kingston evokes the China that lives for the child with a bizarre vigor in the endlessly fascinating cycle of her mother's "talk-story" - her aunt, her father's sister, willed by the village to kill herself and her bastard child, her punishment continuing even after death - her own mother, Brave Orchid, learning (in a time and place that considered it "better to raise geese than girls") to be a doctor and "a capable exorcist" ... and, above all, the fabled "woman warrior," so fascinating to the little girl that she "became" Mu Lan, seeing herself led away to the mountains to be magically trained in the arts of war, returning to right the wrongs done to the villagers ("their griveances carved into my back with knives"), leading avenging troops against the Emperor... And here, all the while, is the peculiar, impinging America where things never shut down ... where the laundry is fearfully hot on summer days - the parents working deep into the night, sorting clothes, while the little ones sleep on shelves .. the America where chidlren misbehave ... where there are bitter silences ("we have so many secrets to hold in") ... where the narrator, entering her teens (and her parents, saying nothing, begin to look for a husband for her), wears shoes with the tongues flapping and talks in her "dried-duck voice" to scare the chosen suitors away. Making us know a strange and hitherto impenetrable world, letting us experience the author's own battles and understand the challenges borne by millions of immigrants in a society pitilessly alien, The Woman Warrior startles and entralls. An electrifying book - as emotional truth, as literary achievement. - Dust jacket.

简介:From its foreword to its notes on ``Where the Stories Come From,'' this ``I Can Read'' collection of seven appealing, mildly scary stories is a model of authenticity: the simplified but effective retellings honor both their sources and their intended audience. Chess's tongue-in-cheek illustrations add a perfect gruesome touch.
