简介: the carrot principle illustrates that the relationship between recognition and improved business results is highly predictable--it's proven to work. but it's not the employee recognition some of us have been using for years. it is recognition done right, recognition combined with four other core traits of effective leadership. gostick and elton explain the remarkably simple but powerful methods great managers use to provide their employees with effective recognition, which all managers can easily learn and begin practicing for immediate results. great recognition doesn't take time--it can be done in a matter of moments--and it doesn't take budget-busting amounts of money. this exceptional book presents the simple steps to becoming a carrot principle manager and to building a recognition culture in your organization; it offers a wealth of specific examples, culled from real-life cases, of the ways to do recognition right. following these simple steps will make you a high-performance leader and take your team to a new level of achievement.
简介:Summary: Publisher Summary 1 The volume covers, in three Sections, the management of perennial and annual crop diseases. The first Section includes stone fruit and apple diseases, grapevine and fruit crops phytoplasma, Phytophthora on citrus, chestnut diseases, esca complex on grapevine and Rosellinia necatrix root rot. The second Section includes models for potato late blight management and Phytophthora decision-support systems, management of bacterial fruit-blotch on cucurbits, Verticillium on tomato, Sclerotinia on carrot, cotton and rice diseases, and rusts. In the third, final Section, two innovative topics are reviewed: DNA fingerprinting diagnostics, and management through endophytes and metabolites, a field with new perspectives in IPM. Publisher Summary 2 This book covers emerging issues in the integrated management of several diseases that affect key economic crops. It provides basic data about the diseases and explores innovative management possibilities tried in different parts of the world.
简介:Pink argues that the secret to high performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. As Daniel H. Pink explains in his new and paradigm- shattering book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, the secret to high performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does--and how that affects every aspect of our lives. He demonstrates that while the old-fashioned carrot-and-stick approach worked successfully in the 20th century, it's precisely the wrong way to motivate people for today's challenges. In Drive, he reveals the three elements of true motivation: a) Autonomy: the desire to direct our own lives; b) Mastery: the urge to get better and better at something that matters; and c) Purpose: the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves. Along the way, he takes us to companies that are enlisting new approaches to motivation and introduces us to the scientists and entrepreneurs who are pointing a bold way forward.

简介:Genome Mapping and Molecular Breeding in Plants presents the current status of the elucidation and improvement of plant genomes of economic interest. The focus is on genetic and physical mapping, positioning, cloning, monitoring of desirable genes by molecular breeding and the most recent advances in genomics. The series comprises seven volumes: Cereals and Millets; Oilseeds; Pulses, Sugar and Tuber Crops; Fruits and Nuts; Vegetables; Technical Crops; and Forest Trees. Vegetables contains reviews in 12 chapters contributed by 31 authors from 10 countries. Covered are tomato, lettuce, radish, carrot, beet, eggplant, cucurbits, onion, garlic and other crops included in Brassica rapa, Brassica oleracea, capsicums and cucurbits. The impressive work that has been done on most of these crops is presented in this volume. Genome projects already initiated on vegetable crops, particularly on Solanaceae and Brassicaceae species, may ignite further interest in other vegetables as well.
简介:Over the past several years, Jonthan Kozol has visited nearly 60 public schools. Virtually everywhere, he finds that conditions have grown worse for inner-city children in the 15 years since federal courts began dismantling the landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. First, a state of nearly absolute apartheid now prevails in thousands of our schools. The segregation of black children has reverted to a level that the nation has not seen since 1968. Few of the students in these schools know white children any longer. Second, a protomilitary form of discipline has now emerged, modeled on stick-and-carrot methods of behavioral control traditionally used in prisons but targeted exclusively at black and Hispanic children. And third, as high-stakes testing takes on pathological and punitive dimensions, liberal education in our inner-city schools has been increasingly replaced by culturally barren and robotic methods of instruction that would be rejected out of hand by schools that serve the mainstream of society. Filled with the passionate voices of children and their teachers and some of the most revered and trusted leaders in the black community, The Shame of the Nation is a triumph of firsthand reporting that pays tribute to those undefeated educators who persist against the odds, but directly challenges the chilling practices now being forced upon our urban systems by the Bush administration. In their place, Kozol offers a humane, dramatic challenge to our nation to fulfill at last the promise made some 50 years ago to all our youngest citizens. - Dust jacket.

简介:This fourth volume in the Handbook of Plant Cell Culture combines the approach of the previous volumes by providing both state-of-the-art basic techniques and their applications to a wide variety of crop species. In authoritative chapters, internationally known scientists cover the latest methods, including embryo culture, somaclonal and gametoclonal variation, electrofusion, organelle transfer, wide hybridization, and chromosome manipulation. Further chapters explore the latest developments in cell culture of such crops as barley, pea, mango, carrot, aspen, and sugar beet. As in volumes 1, 2, and 3, the contributors emphasize practical methodology. Every chapter contains (1) detailed protocols which serve as the foundation of current research; (2) a critical review of the literature, including key contributions and summary tables that highlight valuable information; and (3) in-depth evaluations of the tremendous potential this field shows for crop improvement. In addition, the history and economic importance of each crop are discussed. This standard format ensures a clear and continuous presentation. Special features include informative essays by distinguished scientists, Norman Borlaug and Armin Braun. Borlaug, winner of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his scientific efforts in bringing about the "Green Revolution," discusses plant-breeding goals and strategies for the 1980s. Braun, a pioneer in research on plant cell transformation by Agrobacterium, sheds new light on the genetics of plant tumor development and its importance to experimental oncology. The definitive reference on applying specific cell culture techniques to major crops, Handbook of Plant Cell Culture is an indispensable source of information for plant scientists and students, as well as for researchers in agronomy, horticulture, phytopathology, molecular biology, and plant biology. - Dust jacket.
简介:The production and consumption of vegetables has expanded dramatically in the last years, with a global growth in the production of more than 50% in the last decade and it is expected that in the coming years, vegetable crops production will continue its expansion. The vegetables seed market is very dynamic and competitive, and predominant varieties are quickly replaced by new varieties. Therefore, updated information on the state of the art of the genetic improvement of specific crops is of interest to vegetable crops breeders, researchers and scholars. During the last years an immense quantity of new knowledge on the genetic diversity of vegetables and the utilization of genetic resources, breeding methods and techniques, and on the development and utilization of modern biotechnologies in vegetables crop breeding has accumulated, and there is a need of a major reference work that synthesizes this information. The Handbook of Plant Breeding鈥擵egetables I and II are two volumes devoted to 20 of the most important vegetable crops. These crops belong to eight different botanical families grouped by taxonomic category. The first volume focuses on four families: Asteraceae or Compositae (chicory and endive, globe artichoke and cardoon, and lettuce), Brassicaceae or Cruciferae (cabbage, and cauliflower and broccoli), Chenopodiaceae (spinach and sugar beet) and Cucurbitaceae (cucumber, melon, pumpkin and winter squash, summer squash, and watermelon). The second volume concentrates on four other families: Fabaceae or Leguminosae (garden pea, and snap bean), Liliaceae (asparagus, and onion), Solanaceae (eggplant, pepper, and tomato) and Umbelliferae or Apiaceae (carrot). Chapters have been written by outstanding breeders with wide experience in the crop breeding. Each chapter includes information on the origin and domestication, varietal groups, genetic resources, major breeding achievements and current goals of breeding, breeding methods and techniques, integration of the new biotechnologies in the breeding programmes, and the production of seed of specific crops. About the Editors: Jaime Prohens is president of the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA) and vice-president of the Spanish Society for Horticultural Science (SECH). Prof. Prohens teaches Genetics and Plant Breeding at the Universidad Polit茅cnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain. He leads a group on vegetable crops breeding and has published many scientific papers on different aspects related to this subject. Prof. Prohens also serves as member of the editorial board of several scientific journals. Fernando Nuez is Professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding at the Universidad Polit茅cnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain, and Director of the Institute for Conservation and Improvement of Agrodiversity. Prof. Nuez is author of more than 1000 scientific papers, contributions to congresses and books on plant breeding and has developed several cultivars of vegetable crops. He has been honoured as Honorary member of EUCARPIA for his scientific excellence. He is also director of a Master in Plant Breeding at UPV.
简介: Amazon.com Don Mauer lost 113 pounds and still enjoys good food. His dedication to being lean and loving it comes through loud and clear in this passionate book. He's spent lots of time creating ways to deliver flavor and variety in a repertoire ranging from Tangy Spaghetti a la Matriciana and Herb-Infused Family Salad Dressing to Sensational Cream Cheese Brownies. For all the pleasure they deliver, Mauer's recipes are also remarkably efficient. His enthusiasm for Butter Buds, a frankly fake food, is the only off-note in this wonderful collection of recipes from a cook who can help you lose weight and keep it off. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Publishers Weekly After losing more than 100 pounds and resolving not to gain them back, the author, already a dedicated home cook, embarked on a plan to fashion tasty low-fat versions of his favorite recipes. The fruits of his experiments, most containing no more than 20% fat, have led to a syndicated column and local TV shows and are gathered in this useful, comprehensive collection. General recommendations include using low- or nonfat versions of dairy and dairy-based products, a stingy hand with oils (one tablespoon of olive oil in Spicy Shrimp Creole for four; one and one-half teaspoons of canola oil for preparing Blueberry French Toast) and a reliance on fresh, flavorful ingredients. Some readers may balk at using nonfat butter flavoring, e.g., Butter Buds, but even with the addition of a little real butter, many of the dishes would remain low in fat. Recipes are aimed to satisfy entire families (Macaroni and Cheddar Cheese, made with skim milk and reduced-fat cheese; meaty pasta sauces, calling for 95% lean beef; and plenty of dessert dishes, including carrot cake, brownies and oatmeal cookies). There are easy methods for making breakfast or Italian sausage (with ground pork tenderloin), a generous and versatile array of reduced-fat salad dressings, meat marinades, gravies and sauces and plausible new ways with old favorites (e.g., Green Bean Casserole made with nonfat milk, Swiss cheese and sour cream and corn flakes). Mauer reduces the fat and remains faithful to full satisfaction. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. 简介:"The enlarged European Union needs new instruments for exporting stability and change into the fragile regions and countries beyond its borders. That is why the EU is developing and implementing the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP): a strategic concept which is to enhance the Union's capability to be a driver of reform - without automatically promising the "golden carrot" of membership to the neighbours. This book provides the reader with information on what ENPwants, how it works and what the prospects of the Union's cooperation with neighbouring countries are."--BOOK JACKET.
